OTAGO WINTER SHOW

GRATIFYING ENTRIES. The committee of the Otago A. and P. Society is naturally well pleased with the generous support that it has received in most of the principal competitions at tne Winter Show, which opens to-day. It was fully expected that owing to the unfavourable circumstances there might be _ a falling off in . some of the sections. One exhibitor made a rather apt remark _ when forwarding his entries by stating that he considered that the farmers should do their best to show what they can do under adverse conditions, and evidently there are many other farmers of the same opinion. The committee is certainly indebted to the farmer, his wife, and his family for the satisfactory way in which they have supported the home industries section at the show. It is only the members of the committee who can fully realise the many difficulties that have to be overcome in providing the necessary accommodation to meet all demands, and to display to the best advantage the large number of entries that have been received. Included

in the total of 2757 entries provision had to be made for 28 head of cattle, 16 calves, and 96 sheep, and several other competitions which require a considerable amount of space. Whilst the committee sincerely regrets that several entries had to. be returned, it must be recognised that there is a time when entries must close to enable the catalogue to be printed. It also regrets having to refuse several applications for space, as they were not of sufficient size to enable the exhibits to be properly displayed, and in other cases owing to “the neglect of not making the applications in time. The City Council has agreed to install special lighting in the Octagon similar to what was done during the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Week, and the committee is also endeavouring to arrange with the council to provide better lighting services between the tramways and the society’s buildings. The Space Committee has had a strenuous time in its efforts to meet all demands, and so far has allotted 85 stands.-' For the information of the general public tho following is the general lay-out out the different buildings:—Ground floor of tho Brydone Hall, fat cattle, sheep, calves, and roots; first floor of the same build* ing, factory cheese and butter, hams and bacon, grain and seeds, seed and table potatoes; Fuller’s Hall, fruit and posters, and the City Council will make a forestry display; Victoria Hall, luncheon and tea rooms and the Otago Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club exhibits; Dalgety’a building, which is connected by a canvas passageway to Brydone Hall, wool, farmers’ butter, honey and preserves, bread and scones, cakes and biscuits, soldiers’ exhibits and needlework. The sale of fat cattle will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, and the competitions for cheese grading and fruit packing will be held the following day. The judging will start at 9.30 o’clock this morning, and the doors will be open to the general public at 1.30 p.m. The show will be officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr A. J. Murdoch), at 2.30 p.m. The following is a comparison of the entries received for competition in the respective sections for 1930 and 1931:—
