Delivery of the new lifting bridge being constructed in England for the final span of the western viaduct is expected by the Auckland Harbour Board toward the end of this year. When in the open position the bridge will give a 45ft waterway into the basin at Freeman’s Bay; while closed it will provide a roadway 30ft wide, in addition to carrying one line of railway to Western wharf. In opening, the bridge will roll backward on specially- constructed tracks as the outer end lifts. At present the viaduct is joined by a temporary foot-bridge, which has been of great value to pedestrian traffic. The erection of the permanent structure will be undertaken by the Harbour Board’s staff.
