Napier

(From our own correspondent.) April 11. At the Napier Competitions, held during Easter week, it is pleasing to note that the pupils of our Catholic schools were able to hold their own against all-comers. Master Archie McGrath, a pupil of the Marist Brothers and son of Mr. W. J. McGrath, was a successful competitor. . Out of three entries he secured the special gold medal, which was presented byMiss Cecil Haynes for elocution, for boys under fourteen attending school and not receiving professional tuition; the second prize (silver medal) for the vocal solo, for boys or girls under sixteen; and the second prize (silver medal) for vocal solo by boys. Miss Kathleen Cox, a pupil of the local convent, secured first prize in the piano solo for children under sixteen, and second prize in the piano solo for those under eighteen. The judge (Mr. Baeyertz) complimented Master McGrath on the quality of hfe voice, and said that more should be heard of him at future competitions.
