(From our own correspondent.) Sept-ember 18. His Lordship the Bishop left on Saturday, for Darfieid, where on Sunday last Iho conducted a pastoral visitation. From tJhere the Bishop is to go on to Westr land to continue his episcopal visitation of the diocese. Last] week a convert of 'his Lordship the Bishop received at his hands no less than five Sacraments : Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, and Matrimony — a rather uniqore distinction, and a somewhat uncommon episcopal experience. As a memento 1 of 'the temperance pledge administered by his Lordship the Bishop at Confirmations, ho now presents a handsome card, cabinet size, a feature first introduced at Rangiora recently. One-foalf is occupied with a beautiful engraving, ' Ecce Homo,' and neatly printed on the remainder are the wordis, 'My temperance pledge. The young people and. their instructors deserve much credit for the very pleasing! programme presented. Vocal duets and quartets were sung and nstrumenlal selections were played by the pupils. The farce, ' Cherry Boumce,' a chorus, action and coon songs, floral drill and dance, and a comic cantata, ' Soot and the Fairies,' were very creditably! 'given. The following pupils of the Sisters of the Missions, Sacred Heart Convent High School, Astibullton, werci succes-sflul at the Trinity College eixamaniat/iow in musical knowledge held on June 10 last :— Preparatory division, pass, "Katie Daly, Jane Moreland, Mary McCormack, Monica Muller, Mary Noalan, Kathleen Nealan, andi May Walsh. Intermediate division, pass and honors, Madeline Brick, Ellen Oullen, and Hannah Langley. The following pupils of the Sisters of the Missions, Rosary Con von t, Lees ton, were successful in the Trinity College examination in musical knowledge, held also in June last :— Intermediate grade, B. McCormack, 85. Junior grade, M. Maddock . 97, A. Stapleton 96, D. Boh an 91, A. McEvedy 85. Preparatory grade, M. Duick 95, M. Coe 92, M. McCormack 90. Mr. J. R. Hayward (vice-president) occupied the chair at ihc ordinary meeting of the 'Catholic Club executive committee held on last Tuesday evening. The date of the* projected entertainment in aid of the Sunday school prize fund was fixed for Thursday,, October 5. Two new members were nominated. A letter of tihanks was received from the Rev. Father Marnane for the successful entertainment recently given by the club on behalf of th'G parish funds of St. Mary's, Manchester street. Regret was expressed that Mr. J. F. Shanly, one of the executive, and a ivery energetic member of the club, was ablout to leave for Wellington, to carry on business there for a Christ church firm. It was decided to give; him 1 a send-off on Tuesday evening. It was resolved 1 ta Wold the annual meeting on September 26. The chairman said as this was the last meeting of the present) executive, he wished to thank the members for assisting him generally while acting as chairman.

The Rev. Father O'Connell is temporarily doing duty in the parish of Ha war den, and was at Cheviot on Sunday last. Thd Rev. Father Rockliffe has been appointed to assist the Rev. Father Kerley at Temuka for the present. Reference is made in the personal notes from the London correspondent of the ' Press ' regarding two well known Catholic citizens of Chrdstcfhurch now on tout . — Mr. John Barrett (Christchurch) left London on Wednesday morning for Irelarid. He will go first to Dublin, and will be there during the horse show week. He will also visit Cork, Kerry, and the Irish lakes. Mr. Barrett came Home via San Francisco, starting from Auckland at the beginning of June. He wont on to Louisiana and New York, but he found the weather so tryirigly warm that he soon came to Liverpool and London. Mr. J. M. Madden (Christchurch), who oame Home by th© s.s. ' -Gothic,' is at present staying at Dorking, id Surrey, with relatives, but toe leaves England tomorrow for Norway, a trip which will occupy him a rqonth. Landing again in this country, he will go direct tq Scotland amid finally woTk his way back to London, via the English lakes. He hopes later to spend some time in Switzerland, and in the autumn he will visit France before making a tour in Italy, staying respectively at Venice, Rome, and Naples. At the termination of this tour he will join at Naples one of the steamers for Australia on his way back to New Zealand- It is Mr. Maddens intention to obtain sketched of English and Continental scenery ; indeed, this is the main object of Ms trip. Mr. Madden, it may be remarked, is one of this Colony's most successful landscape painters, and a fine collection of pictures from his brush will shortly 'be disposed of in the interests ol St. Mary's, Manchester street, by art union.
