Otaki
The funeral of the late lEoani Taupe M Iletekia t°ok place, on September 7, when a large assemblage of both Maoris and Europeans followed the remains to the Catholic Church and back to the cemetery. The sen ice in church and at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Father "Melu, who referred to the many good qualities of the deceased, especially his fenrnt and practical faith' As the cortege passed out of church, the Dead March in ' Saul ' was played. The ceremony at the graveside was a most impressive 1 one. There were a great many wreaths forwarded, including one from the Tainui Football and Cricket Clubs, and Otaki Golf Club, of which deceased was one of the most popular members. — R.I P. * The on«er|!uies of the late Sister Cecilia of the Otaki Convent (says the local ' Mail ' of September 8) took place last Wednesday afternoon. In the
morning a Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of +he deceased religious was celebrated by the Rev. Father O'Sullivan (Wan-ganui). The altar and church were suitably draped for the solemn occasion. The funeral service was conducted in St Mary's Church by the. Rev. Father Melu, assisted by the Rev. Fathers O'Sullivan, De Lach, and Vibaud. The attendance was very large, including a number of Maoris ; indeed, the fiuneral was 'one of the largest seen at Otaki. 'The remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery by ten stalwart young' natives of tho Ngatiraukawa tribe, who wore mats and. had a band of greenery round their heads, in token of their mourning. The concluding service was can-ducted at the graveside. The whole ceremony was a most impressive one, and those present were greatly moved, showing the love and respect towards the departed Sister, who was a great favorite with all. The deceased "had resided at Otaki on two different occasions, fox a period of some seven years in all, during which time she was greatly b,eloved. As a teacher of music she was particularly successful, her pupils doing remarkably well at their various examinations. -K.I. P.
