JOAD'S LAST BOOK
FOLLY FARM, by C. E. M. Joad; with a forward by John Betjeman and the Rev. Canon Frederic Hood; Faber and Faber, English price 9/6. : ‘THIS book, written during the final stages of Cyril Joad’s illness, is mainly dialogue in which the characters (one of whom is recognisable as Joad himself) chatter about population problems. the Welfare State, Malaya, the lust for food and wine, and some of the author’s other interests. The writers of the foreword take some trouble to deny that Dr. Joad took up Christianity "as a result of the public humiliation he endured over his summons by the Railwavs Executive for travelling without a ticket." This we may well believe: Joad himself makes flippant reference to his dismissal by the BBC on page 2. All in all, neither the foreword, nor the introduction, nor the book itself does anything to enhance the late Dr. Joad’s
reputation.
