(continued from previous page) it saw the Home Rule controversy and . the downfall of Parnell, the end of Gladstone in politics and a decade of Conservative government, the flush of imperialism and the Boer War and the great struggle over free trade, the dock strike and the entry of organised labour into politics, struggles over India and the government of London and the place of religion in education. The author has therefore virtually to write the whole of British history in his period, as well as of Radical feeling and Radical propaganda before Radicalism was swallowed up by Socialism, and the Radicals by the Labour Party. The book is thickly sown with quotations from speeches and the press, and Dr. Maccoby cannot help giving the impression that he has not properly absorbed his material.
