No. 37. —Petition of Te Koeowhiti Tuataka (Mrs. Douglas) (No. 1). Petitionee urges her claims in the Okauia Block, and prays for inquiry and relief. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government, for the purpose of having the matter further inquired into. 30th July, 1895.

No. 366, 1894.—Petition of Hoterene Kawiti and 32 Others. Petitionees pray that they may still be allowed to use a certain road to the Kawakawa Estuary which was closed when the railway-station was removed. I have the honour to report that, as the road referred to has been used for years both by Natives and Europeans, and, as the Natives received a distinct promise that the road should remain open, the Committee recommends that the Government should grant the prayer of the petition. 30th July, 1895.

No. 4.—Petition of H. T. Mahupuku. Petitionee states that he is the owner of land valued at about £18,000, and has other rights in land worth some thousands more. He wishes for authority to borrow on the security of his land to pay his debts. Under the Act of last session, and by the policy of the Government indorsed by the House, he can neither sell his land nor borrow. If he were allowed to borrow or sell he would have enough left, he says, to maintain himself and his family. He is threatened with bankruptcy if he can get no relief by some alteration of the law. The Committee recommend the petition to the careful and serious consideration of the Government, believing that cases of this kind should be dealt with in the amending Bill about to be brought before Parliament. 31st July, 1895.

No. 399, 1894. —Petition of Irimina Tatua Hapuku and 9 Others. Petitionees pray that the Whatuma Lake, near Waipukurau, may be returned to them. I have the honour to report that, as the Committee find no mention in the deed of cession of the Hapuku Block that the lake in question was to be reserved, they have no recommendation to make. 7th August, 1895.- .
