I have the honour to report that the Committee regret that, as the land referred to in the petition has been disposed of by the Crown, it is too late for them to make any recommendation. 26th July, 1895.

No. 734, 1894.—Petition of Timoti Puhipi and 5 Others (No. 2). Petitioners pray that certain land in the Tangongi Swamp may be returned to them. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends, as these grievances are of very long standing, and as it will be the means of settling these matters and putting the minds of the Natives at rest for once and for all, that the Stipendiary Magistrate of the district be appointed and authorised to inquire into the allegations set forth in the petition. 26th July, 1895.

Nos. 35, 105, and 156. —Petitions of Paratene Matenga and 181 Others; Taituha Hape and 68 Others; H. Tare Tikao and 22 Others. Petitionees allege that the Maoris do not receive proper notices relating to the rating of their land, and that the rating-values are wrongly assessed. They pray that the Native race may be exempt from taxation. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that these petitions should be referred to the Government for the purpose of having the allegations as to insufficient rating-notices and wrong valuations fully inquired into; and they also recommend that all local bodies should be instructed to insure that Native owners are made fully aware of all matters relating to the rating of their properties. ! 26th July, 1895. —■

No. 707, 1894.—Petition of Hohepa te Poki and 206 Others. Petitionees pray that they may receive a grant of land in reward for their loyalty during the Taranaki War. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration when other claims for military services are being gone into. 26th July, 1895.
