ORDERS OP REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 14th Day of July, 1938. Ordered, "That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from Mto Z that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of the Hon. Mr. Cobbe, Mr. Coulter, Colonel Hargest, Mr. Holland, Mr. Hunter, Mr. Lyon, Mr. Neilson, the Rev. Mr. Nordmeyer, Mr. Osborne, and the Mover." —(Hon. Mr. Mason, for Hon. Mr. Semple.) Friday, the 15th Day of July, 1938. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1937-38 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. No. 141/1937-38.— Petition of T. R. E. Moss. Praying for a compassionate grant in respect of injuries allegedly sustained whilst travelling on the New Zealand railways. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. The Committee further recommends that a auitable position should be found for the petitioner in some Government Department. 24th August, 1938.
No. 32. —Petition of Susan McAvinue. Praying for payment of the sum of £52 10s. allegedly due to her late husband for services rendered to the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.
No. 9.—Petition of T. W. Nibld. Praying for a retiring-allowance or other relief in consideration of his services as a member of the Police Force. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.

No. 92/1937-38.—Petition of A. R. Gorbey and 473 Others. Praying that licensed premises be not established at Wellsford. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. Ist September, 1938.
No. 115/1937-38.—Petition of J. L. Nelson. Praying that the license now held in respect of the Puhoi Hotel be not transferred to AVellsford. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. Ist September, 1938.
No. 35.—Petition of J. N. Oemiston. Praying for compensation for injuries allegedly received in an accident involving a motor-vehicle driven by an employee of the Post and Telegraph Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. In the opinion of the Committee a grant of fifty pounds (£5O) would meet the circumstances of the case. Ist September, 1938.
No. 75/1937-38.—Petition of W. J. Schollum and 65 Others. Praying that the license now held in respect of the Puhoi Hotel be not removed to another locality. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. Ist September, 1938.

No. 40. —Petition of Reverend A. Lawry and 39 Others. Praying that the prayer of the petition of W. L. Walker be given effect to. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration and inquiry. 16th September, 1938.
No. 69.—Petition of P. J. Mulqueen and 104 Others. Pbaying that a totalizator permit be granted to the Cattle Flat Hack Racing Club, of Balfour, Southland. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 16th September, 1938.
No. 99.—Petition of J. O'Connor. Praying for compensation on account of alleged depreciation in the value of a property by the closing of a road under the provisions of section 26 of the Reserves and other Lands Disposal and Public Bodies Empowering Act, 1907. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of the Committee, the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 16th September, 1938.

No. 39.—Petition of W. L. Walker. Praying for investigation into the circumstances surrounding his bankruptcy. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution : " That this Committee place on record its high appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Rev. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution : " That this Committee place on record its appreciation of the capable manner in which the Clerk, Mr. J. F. Koddoll, has carried out his duties during the session, and directs that this resolution be reported to the House." 16th September, 1938.
Final Report.
