COMMITTED ARSON
SHAREMILKER AND NEIGHBOUR WHANGAREI, Thursday Pleading guilty to a charge of arson, Eric William Spear, snaremilker, of Maungatapere, was committed for sentence by Messrs L. J. Brake and J. G. Draper, J’s. P., today. In a statement to the police Spear said he had tried twice on the same day to burn down the house of a neighbour, George Hargreaves, when he knew that no one was at home. On the first occasion the fire had not caught, while on the second he had been found by the occupiers on their return home and had stated that he had seen the fire and had come to put it out. Later he owned to starting the fire and had since paid for the damage caused.
