Miner Injured Injuries to the hand were received by Mr Robert Fairhurst, aged 62, miner, of Huntly, when he was caught by a fall of coal yesterday. The injured man was admitted to the Waikato Hospital, where his condition is satisfactory.

Canadian Wheat Crop A message from Ottawa says the Dominion Bureau of Statistics’ report on the field crop shows that the area sown in wheat in the autum of 1941 is estimaied at 756,000 acres, an increase of 87.000 acres compared with last year. Sultry Conditions

Register of Women A register of women throughout New Zealand is being prepared, according to an announcement made by the Director of National Service, Mr J. S. Unchanged Dividend Woolworths (N.Z.), Limited, advise that the directors are recommending to pay in December a dividend of 9 per cent, making 14 per cent for the year. Net profit for the year ended October 1, after providing £212,250 for taxation, amounts to £94,612. Earnings compare with £99,070 in the previous year and £116,866 in 1939, when taxation absorbed £IBB,OOO and £150,000 respectively. The dividend on ordinary shares at 14 per cent is unchanged, while in addition 9 per cent is paid on preference shares. Matriculation Record A record number of candidates, 185, is scheduled to sit in Hamilton for the university entrance (matriculation) examinations, which commence in the Alexandra Hall on Monday, December 1. Sittings are also being held at Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Matamata, Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Huntly, Raglan, and other district centres. Seventeen of the candidates are entering for the university scholarship examinations and ten for school certificates. In addition to the usuaL compulsory subjects, those selected by local entrants cover history, geography, chemistry, physics, home science, drawing and agriculture.

Home Guard Training The training of members of the Hamilton Battalion of the Home Guard was carried a further stage last night when a full parade was held. Following the battalion fallin and church parade A Company marched out to Te Rapa and reconnoitred and inspected suitable defensive posts that may be manned in the event of Hamilton being threatened, while B Company and Headquarters Company carried out a training syllabus on the parade ground. C, D and J Companies adjourned to company headquarters and had a full discussion on last week-end’s bivouac and the training exercises connected with it.
