SPINNING DEMONSTRATION

LOCAL COMMITTEE FORMED Great interest was shown by the women of the Raglan district recently, when there was a large crowd to see the spinning demonstration given by Mrs Finlayson and Mrs Spencer, of Hamilton. Mrs Finlayson explained the process of home-spun wool and demonstrated the craft on a hand spinning wheel. A special gadget for aitaching to a sewing machine was also on exhibition. A special appeal has been received from the Merchant Service for seaboot stockings, socks, pullovers, scarves, mittens and balaclavas, and it is essential that the wool be spun straight from the sheep to retain the natural oil. Mrs Spencer explained the dyeing of the wool and exhibited various samples. Most of the dyes had been made from native trees. The following committee was formed with the object of raising funds to purchase the necessary equipment for spinning: Mesdames W. R. Moore and C. Parsons (Lady Galway Guild), J. Pooley and R. Cowley (Women's Division), W. Cartinill and Miss D. Kenah (Women's Institute). Owing to the urgency of the appeal from the Merchant Service, farmers of the district were requested to donate fleeces so that the work may be commenced as soon as possible.
