SHOP LIGHTING

CHRISTMAS PERIOD REQUEST TO COUNCIL The desire for some relaxation of the lighting restrictions during the coming holiday season was expressed in a letter to the Hamilton Borough Council last night from the president of the Hamilton Retailers’ Association, Mr B. E. Woodhams. The retailers, he said, were anxious to co-operate with the council in saving power, but the Christmas season was a very important part of the year in providing facilities for the community. Adequate lighting played a large part, and it was suggested that window lighting, now restricted to the hours when shops were open, should be permitted for a longer time, especially during the week or ten days before Christmas. The council referred the request to the Trading and Finance Committee, with power to act.
