PIG MEAT EXPORTS
APPEAL TO PRODUCERS NO SLACKENING OF EFFORT CONSUMPTION IN DOMINION An appeal to Waikato pig producers to continue with their winter production programme and on no account to slacken their efforts to produce the highest quality pig meat was made by Mr H. M. Peirson, Extension Officer in Pig Husbandry, in an interview today. In view of recent announcements that porker pigs up to 1201 b. are still exportable, said Mr Peirson, there was no justification for the certain degree of nervousness apparent during the past few days. Another thing to be remembered was that New Zealand consumed 50 per cent of the pig meats produced in this country, so that pig meat producers were in a far more fortunate position in respect to exports than was the case with other branches of the meat industry. The slogan of every pig producer should be to carry on. While at the moment things might look black, the Dominion would be in a very unhappy position if at some future date the country were called upon to supply Britain with essential foodstuffs and through some ill-advised action could not provide such products. ‘‘After all/’ continued Mr Peirson,” the export position might easily change overnight, so actually there should be no grounds for pessimism*”
