PROBATION SENTENCE
CHARGES AGAINST BROTHERS CONVERSION OF CARS Twelve months’ probation was imposed on two brothers who appeared before Mr W. H. Freeman. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Hamilton, today for sentence on numerous charges of car conversions in Hamilton and Auckland from October last year to January. The two youths, one 18i and the other 17 years of age, who had pleaded guilty to all the charges were convicted two weeks ago. Suppression of their names was granted by the magistrate on the grounds of their youth. Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh pointed out that the boys came from a good home and neither could drive a car. “If you weren’t so young I would think it best to give you both a short term of imprisonment,” remarked the magistrate. “I don’t know whether you were led on by the younger boy or you led him astray. However, I think it is only right that your names should be suppressed because of your youth and previous good record.”
An order was made for restitution of £8 12s, representing the value of articles missing from the cars that were converted.
