ALL SHOULD SERVE
IN SOME CAPACITY OR OTHER STATE ACTION PROPOSED The question whether there should be compulsory service in a war capacity, both in New Zealand and overseas, was referred to at the Hamilton Borough Council meeting last night. The Stratford Borough Council sought support of the following resolution:—“That in view of the serious position now obtaining, the threatening aspect in the Pacinc, and the urgent need of preparedness for local defence, this council urges upon the Government that jt exercises its powers of enforcing service under the Home Defence and Emergency Precautions schemes by all those fit and able to render service therein, and not at present being called on lor overseas service or serving in the defence forces of this country.” It was pointed out that overseas service could be enforced, so it was only reasonable to require service within the Dominion.
On the Mayor’s initiative the council received the letter. Mr Caro commented that in view of the keen activity of the Home Guard and E.P.S. throughout the Waikato there seemed no need for the action proposed at the present time, in this part of the Dominion at least.
