NO BAIL

OSTLER CASE APPEAL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday An application for bail so that they might prepare their case for the Court of Appeal hearing on Monday was made in the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Northcroft today by Harold Alexander Ostler and Travers Burnell Christopher Christie. The prisoners were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment on February 18 for attempting to publish a subversive statement. His Honour refused the application, saying he had no power to grant it. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr A. T. Donnelly, gave an assurance that facilities would be given the prisoners to consult documents or advisers as might be necessary in preparing their appeal. A request by Ostler that a Royal Commission be set up to investigate allegations made in the Suprece Court regarding ‘police procedure in gathering evidence has been refused by the Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason.
