PAY FOR UNEMPLOYED
FIT MEN NOT IN FORCES GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday “The Social Security Commission is empowered to terminate an unemployment benefit or suspend payment of such benefit up to a period of six weeks if it is established that any applicant has lost his employment through reasons within his own control or refused or failed without good and sufficient reason to accept suitable employment, which would include service with the forces,” stated the Minister of Social Security, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in a letter received at a meeting of the Dominion executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The letter referred to the recommendation of the Dominion council of the association, which urged the withholding of the unemployment benefit in cases of fit men eligible for service and those acknowledged disloyalists who refused to accept their responsibility for service with the forces without reasonable excuse. The Minister’s reply was noted with satisfaction.
