SPECTACLES ISSUED
STANDARD TYPE USED SOLDIERS’ EYES TESTED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The system of eye-sight testing adopted for members of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force was explained today by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones. He said that all men wearing glasses were now tested while they were in camp and a standard type of spectacle was being provided. "When the glasses the men are wearing are found to be unsatisfactory, adjustments are made and in many cases new glasses have been provided,” Mr Jones said. “All the spectacles have standard steel frames which fit closely for use when gas masks are being worn. One pair of service spectacles is provided each man requiring them before he leaves for overseas and a second pair will be supplied at the overseas camp.” A full optical service was now in operation at each camp, the Minister added. Arrangements had been made for the attendance of selected members of the Institute of Opticians, and they had done excellent work.
