RIVER TRANSPORT
HAMILTON PORT BUSY TIMBER FOR BUTTER BOXES The Hamilton river port has been the scene of much activity during the past week, and a transport feat which is hard to surpass has been accomplished. In all, 250,000 feet of timber and 500 yards of metal have been shipped to the Hamilton wharf. The demand for timber has by no means been satisfied and despite the efforts of several carriers, a huge pile of timber can usually be seen on the wharf. From Greymouth the timber is shipped to Port Waikato. At this point the work of the small river steamers begins. Skilled drivers guide these vessels, as the Waikato is rather treacherous in places and there is a constant danger of the boats grounding. The timber now being handled is the property of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, Limited, and will be used in the construction of butter boxqs.
