HELD AS USUAL
LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS GOVERNMENT DECISION OVERWHELMING OPINION (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday ‘‘The Government has decided that the local body elections which are due to be held in May next year shall take place as usual,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W E. Parry, in the House of Representatives to-day. The Minister had promised earlier to make a statemenl on the question. “The Government has consulted some of the principal organisations concerned with local body elections, following representations made some time ago that the elections might be postponed on account of the international situation,” Mr Parry said. “The Government has now considered the replies received from the organisations and from other bodies interested and has come to the conclusion that, in view of the overwhelming opinion expressed, there is no justification for postponing the elections. There will be, of course one or two amendments introduced dealing with local government.” Mr F. W. Doidge (Opposition— Tauranga): Does that mean we are going to have a general election next year, too? Government Members: We will take you on. Are you anxious to lose?
