FARM HOUSING
PIAKO COUNTY VIEWS SPECIAL MEETING NEXT MONTH (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Tuesday As the result of a letter from the Counties Association regarding the rural housing scheme, the Piako County Council decided to hold a special meeting on October 7 to receive a report from the chairman, the county clerk and the county solicitor. Members expressed the opinion .that there were many anomalies in the Rural Housing Act. A letter was received from the Post and Telegraph Department asking for a plan of the road where a settler had damaged an underground cable. The council decided to forward the plan, but to disclaim any responsibility in the matter. A further letter was received from the same department asking the council to pay half the cost of ' shifting 14 telegraph poles on the Te Aroha-Hamilton highway at an esitmated cost of £7O. The council agreed on the condition that the Main Highways Board found its quota. The council agreed to co-operate with the patriotic committee in the waste salvage campaign for war purposes and in the despatch of Christmas parcels overseas. Ragwort Problem A letter from the Minister of Agriculture stated that the question of another stock inspector was under consideration. In regard to ragwort eradication, the Minister considered ! his department had done all that could be expected of it. Mr Burgess pointed out that it had been impossible last season to get men to do the work. He considered the council was doing its duty in bringing the matter before the Minister. Other members agreed and ex- ' pressed the opinion that it was not the duty of the council but of the Government to undertake the work. ! The chairman, Mr W. C. Kennedy, informed the meeting that in com- | pany with the engineer-surveyor and ; settlers interested, he had again in- | spected the properties through which ' the new road at Tinohia would be made, and the matter had been com- | pleted. , Mr W. Rushton invited the chair-' ; man, county clerk and engineer to attend a meeting at Kiwitahi to discuss the New Zealand Mobile Voluunteers scheme of National Defence. It was decided to return to the writer, a settler at Tahuna, a letter he forwarded to the council. That the letter was insulting was the opinion of all members.
