DECLARED A SCANDAL
NO HAMILTON MORTUARY HOSPITAL NOT COMPENSATED “ It is a scandal that a town the size of Hamilton has not a public mortuary. Nearly every other town in the district has one,” said Mr J. Banks, at the meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board to-day, when a communication was received from the Department of Justice stating that it was not possible to pay the board for post mortem examinations conducted at the hospital mortuary. The board had asked the department for a payment of 10s 6d for each public post mortem until such time as a public mortuary was established in Hamilton.
The department replied that there was no statute authority for making such a payment, and further, the department considered that such services were covered by a Government grant to the board. “ The sooner statutory authority is given the better,” remarked Mr R. Eyre.
