NEW NAVAL BASES
BRITAIN AND AMERICA REACTION IN JAPAN INTERESTS IN PACIFIC (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 5 Reports received in Washington from Tokio indicate that the Japanese public visualises the likelihood of a joint anti-Japanese front by Britain and the United States as one of the ultimate results of the new naval base agreement, although the agreement is at present directed against the Axis. The newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun comments that, with Germany controlling Europe, British and American interests in Australia and other Pacific lands must increase. The Asahi Shimbun foresees the possibility of a strong British Fleet shifting to Singapore, while Australia, New Zealand, India and Malaya remain in British hands. WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 President Roosevelt announced that Costa Rica and Ecuador had offered full co-operation in the defence of the Western Hemisphere. He denied that the United States was actually negotiating anywhere for the acquisition of additional SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 6 Colonel Knox has departed for Honolulu to inspect the Pacific defences. He may also visit Wake and Midway Islands, in view of the battle fleet manoeuvres.
