AIRMEN’S ORDEAL

THROUGH WATERLESS BUSH TREK OF 150 MILES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 3 After the Italians had shot down a bomber of the South African Air Force during a low-flying reconnaissance near Asmado, Southern Abyssinia, 100 miles from the Kenya frontier, the crew, consisting of a pilot, a gunner and a photographer, trekked 150 miles through waterless bush. After the first week the men’s food gave out, and the gunner, sick and exhausted, begged the others to leave him. The photographer, however, supported him for three days before a ground search party found them on the point of death.

The crew during the last days drank the liquid in their compasses. They jettisoned everything possible, but the photographer clung to his films, which later proved very valuable. The day after they reached their base, the same airmen again flew over the country in which they had suffered.
