PARACHUTE ESCAPES

NEW GERMAN APPARATUS LIKE JACK-IN-THE-BOX (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrig-ht) LONDON. Sept. 3 German fighter aeroplanes are fitted with springs under the seats to assist parachute escapes. The air correspondent of the Times, who reports this, says: “The spring is apparently released by a button or lever near the pilot’s seat. The spring is so strong that it hurls him straight from the machine like a jack-in-the-box.”

A Hurricane pilot attacking a Messerschmitt recently saw his bullets entering the fuselage. He was surprised to see the pilot spring into the air. like a man standing at attention, before descending by parachute.
