MONTH’S RAINFALL

LESS THAN AVERAGE AUGUST MILD TEMPERATURES The year 1940 to date has been drier than the average. The rainfall for August this year was 3.36in., compared with 5.92in. last year and an average August rainfall of 3.96in. July of this year was unusually dry, the recording being only 1.99in. compared with 8.42in. for the corresponding month in 1939. For the first eight months of the current year 29.82in. of rain have fallen, which is much less than the total up till September of last year, when 36.76in. had been recorded If the average yearly rainfall of 46.32 in. is to be reached a higher monthly rainfall will have to be shown during the next four weeks. August was also an unusually mild month. Some frosts were recorded, but none of them was severe, except that recorded on August 1, when 14 degrees was registered at Ruakura and 9 degrees in Hamilton. Ideal Growing Weather The absence of heavy frosts and the moderate rainfall has stimulated the growth of grass throughout the Waikato. Losses in calves and lambs have been considerably smaller than in other years. The general public has welcomed the fine weather, and with warmer days now here some hardy Hamiltonians are enjoying an occasional dip in the Lake and the Waikato Rjv«r.
