SHOE LACES SCARCE
SUPPLIES OF COTTON With stocks being constantly whittled away by the regular demand and production being reduced as one of the effects of the war, a shortage in the supply of cotton shoe laces has arisen in Hamilton. A number of shoe retailers have completely run out of black laces and have only comparatively few pairs of brown and tan laces. With the manufacturers, the position has become so acute that many new shoes are being provided with black leather laces instead of the customary cotton article.
The supply of cotton laces has suffered on account of the cotton being required for war purposes, and in addition most of the laces come from Britain and France. A considerable supply was also of Japanese manufacture and this source has also been cut off. Black laces have become more scarce than the brown and tan on account of the fact that more black shoes are worn than the other shades and the demand for black laces has been consequently greater. In many instances people have been buying tan laces and dyeing them black.
