PRISONER RETAKEN TWO DAYS SPENT IN BUSH ELUDED ESCORT BY RUSE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WHAKATANE, Monday Wet through, exhausted and lacerated after 48 hours’ foodless liberty in the dense bush near Fenton’s sawmill, in the Whakatane district, Arthur Mitchell Wray, who escaped from police escort on Friday, was recaptured last night. Wray, who is aged 25, is a motor driver, of Te Teko. He was on remand from Rotorua to Whakatane on a charge of abduction. He claimed to be car sick, but when the escort stopped the car and allowed him to leave the vehicle, the prisoner dived into the roadside scrub. Rotorua and Whakatane police under Sergeant M. Farrell, of Whakatane, searched the district all the week-end. Persistent wet weather made the task difficult and it was not until Sunday night that Wray was recaptured in an exhausted condition. He will appear in the Whakatane Court this afternoon.
