NGARUA FUNCTION

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION The Ngarua Hall was filled to capacity recently, when a combined modern and old-time dance was held in aid of Red Cross funds. Music for dancing was supplied by the Blue Boys’ Orchestra, extras being played by Mr E. Holmes. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs T. Jury, Miss M. James and Mr R. Dench, and Mr and Mrs A. Magowan. A five hundred card tournament was arranged for non-dancers, the successful players being Mrs J. Wilson and Mr C. E. Waddell, Waihou. During the evening Mr W. Scott, chairman of the hall committee, expressed thanks to the general public for their support, and stated that the funds would benefit by approximately £lB. Mrs I. Priest donated a trophy for competition, the winner being Mr W. Farquhar (Waihou). Mr J. Thomlinson acted as master of ceremonies. A pleasant interval in the proceedings was the announcement by Mr W. F. Conning of the 79th birthday of his mother, Mrs M. J. Conning, of Waihou. Mr Conning presented his mother with a handsome two-tiered birthday cake mounted with the appropriate number of candles. On behalf of the Ngarua branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the president, Mrs W. Scott, in a b|ief speech, congratulated Mrs -Donning and wished her many more years of happiness.
