HAMILTON HARRIERS

SWEENEY CUP TO MARTIN

FASTEST TIME BY ROTHERHAM The Hamilton Harrier Club’s fivemile Sweeney Cup road race was decided over an out-and-home course, starting from Knox Presbyterian Church, Grey Street, on Saturday. Eighteen competitors faced the starter and the result was:—C. Martin (3m 30s), 1; C. Rotherham (40s), 2; R. Gardner (lm). 3. Time 30m 545. Martin put up a sensational effort for a junior competing in his first real road test. He dropped his comarkers early and at halfway led by 180 yards from Wood (3m 30s), Crabb (2m 10s), Adams (2m 30s), Smith (4m), Joyes (2m 10s), Richardson (lm 10s), Cranston (lm iOs), and Saunders (lm 10s), with the remainder close up, and the backmarkers, Rotherham (40s) and Chitty (scr) making up ground.

On the home stretch Martin continued in great style and won untroubled by nearly 300 yards. Rotherham put in some great work over the last two miles, catching one after another of his clubmates. R. Gardner, who won the Sweeney Cup twice previously, finished solidly just ahead of Wood, Richardson, Hill Garvey, Saunders and Chitty.

The fastest time contest resulted: C. Rotherham, 28m 335, 1; R. Gardner, 29m 10s, 2; C. Hill, 29m 21s, 3.
