CLARKE CUP TWO TEAMS LEVEL CITY AND RAGLAN As a result of the Clarke Cup games on Saturday Raglan and City are level on points and a play-off will be necessary. Raglan had another win by default, City defeated Taupiri, at Taupiri, and Technical accounted for Frankton at Rugby Park. Results Technical Old Boys 6, Frankton 3. City 6, Taupiri 0. Raglan won by default from Old Boys. Points Raglan 8, City 8, Technical Old Boys 4, Old Boys 4, Taupiri 4,
TECHNICAL BEATS FRANKTON GOOD FORWARD PLAY In a game in which there was some good forward play, but in which the back play was spoilt by mishandling, Technical Old Boys defeated Frankton at Rugby Park by 6 points to 3. There was little between the teams throughout and the close nature of the scoring kept the crowd interested. The teams were:— Frankton —Simpkins, Davies, Griffiths, R. Aherne, Elliott, Cassells, Wilkins, Miller, Lines, Taylor, Belcher, Newcombe, Bootten, Bowler, Dick.
Technical Old Boys—McGrail, Nisbet, Snell, Simpson, Sykes, S. Houghton, E. R. Houghton, O’Meara, Clough, Flannagan, Warren, Lye, Hills, Paterson, Morgan. Technical had a chance when Sykes cut through and punted but Snell failed to collect the kick although he had gone through well. Technical scored first, however, when McGrail goaled from a penalty.— Technical 3, Frankton 0.
Clough, Warren and Flannagan gave Technical the territorial advantage and Snell kept the team on attack with a well-placed kick. Simpson, Belcher and Dick forced play back to midway and a fine linekick by Simpson put Frankton a few yards from the line. Clough and Warren soon had Technical in attacking position again and the backs tried several movements, but Simpson was very safe.
Davies, Elliott and Dick participated in a dribbling rush which went nearly the length of the field but a free kick gave Technical relief. The game was still confined to the forwards but when a clearing kick by Griffiths failed to reach the line Snell handed on to Simpson, who scored in the corner, for Technical to have a six-point advantage. The kick was disallowed.—Technical 6, Frankton 0. The Frankton backs tried to inaugurate passing rushes but the ball was too greasy for accurate handling and half-time came with no change in the score. Frankton’s Only Score Frankton made the play in the early stages of the second spell and after three five-yard scrums Wilkins dived over, Cassells failing to convert. —Frankton 3, Technical 6. Technical now took up the run of play but Frankton’s defence held. The Frankton backs at last had a run but Skyes tackled Aherne low. Flannagan showed out in another dash but he again kicked too hard and Simpson cleared. Throwing the ball about much better, Frankton went to the attack, but twice the ball was kicked too hard and it went dead. The game see-sawed between the twenty-fives with many stoppages for knock-ons. After Technical had the advantage for a long spell Frankton was relieved by a free kick. Frankton then had a turn at attack but Technical forced down. Frankton later was awarded a free kick but Cassells failed as the final whistle blew with the score. —Technical Old Boys 6, Frankton 3.
Mr L. Retter was the referee.
CLOSE GAME AT TAUPIRI City, winner of the Stag Trophy and Sage Memorial Cup last year, drew level with Raglan in the Clarke Cup contest on Saturday when the team defeated Taupiri, at Taupiri, by 6 points to 0. Both sides were short owing to the Waikato representative fixture and
called on a number of junior players, but the game was close and exciting. Heavy rain militated against 'spectacular play, but City’s points, two tries, both came from good back movements.
The game had been in progress only a quarter of an hour when City’s backs handled brightly, Sunich, at centre, bursting through for a try. City led by this one try at half-time, and in the second spell a similar movement culminated in another try by the same player. A feature of the game was the excellent standard of full-back play, both S. Brighouse, for City, and E. Burke, for Taupiri, handling perfectly and kicking accurately. The final score was.—City 6, Taupiri 0. OTHER RESULTS Representative Matches Auckland 19, Bay of Plenty S. Taranaki 11, Wellington 9. West Coast 13, Canterbury 11. Hawke’s Bay 18, Manawatu 8.
