HIGH SCORING

WAIKATO’S RUGBY WIN THAMES VALLEY LOSES 9—28 ONE-SIDED ENCOUNTER (Times Special Reporter) MORRINSVILLE, Saturday Waikato won its final Rugby representative match of the season in effortless style today, when the team beat Thames Valley at Morrinsvilje by 29 points to 8. Thus Waikato maintained its long record of victories over the Thames Valley union. Although the match was full of scoring movements, many of which were cleverly executed by the Waikato players, the play was never very exciting. It became a procession of scoring and in the second half the Waikato players often lapsed into careless football. Forwards More Experienced Waikato had a big advantage in weight and its forwards were far more experienced than the opposition. The Valley backs tackled poorly, with the result that the Waikato rearguard, well fed with the ball, was confronted with almost continual opportunities. Had Waikato’s goal kicking been better the side would have attained a much higher score. The team secured eight tries, only one of which was converted, and a penalty goal. Valley scored twice, one try being converted. The teams were:— Waikato.—D. G. Ensor; G. H. Childs, A. J. Aitken, C. Perkins; J. Everest, W. Carroll; W. Brown; M. Hewitt, W. H. Warrender, A. Thomson, M. J. Johnson, C. Satherley, J. M. Taylor, E. H. Catley, P. J. Farren. Thames Valley.—Douglas; Wilson. Millar, Baker; Clarke, Woodlands; Furey; Trembath, Walford, Kotara, Taylor, Findlay, Kneebone, Heenan, White. Points Come Early With the game still in its infancy, Waikato opened the initial attack when the ball went right through the backs to Childs. The winger beat Baker before opening an inpassing bout in which J. Everest, Satherley, Farrer and Taylor cooperated. The latter fumbled and Thames Valley touched down. Johnson charged the drop-out and from a resultant Valley infringement Aitken landed a good penalty goal. Waikato 3 Thames Valley 0 Momentarily Valley turned the attack, but soon Hewitt and Warrender were leading Waikato in a forward dribbling rush. As the charge swept on Hewitt secured possession and transferred to Thomson, who scored. Aitken missed a difficult kick. Waikato 6 Thames Valley 0 Waikato’s cohesion between forwards and backs was devastating to the Valley defence. Warrender secured from the ruck straight away and set Carroll and Aitken speeding through the defence before Childs secured possession for a brilliant sprint around the flank to score. Dewitt’s kick just failed. Waikato 9 Thames Valley 0 Valley’s Unlucky Kick For a time Valley held the advantage. and Woodlands’ pick from a penalty bounced infield off the post. The advantage was temporary, however, and with a feast of the ball, Waikato soon forced Valley into a confined area. With the advantage Waikato could well afford to throw the ball about with reckless abandon. From near the line J. Everest received the ball from Carroll. Beating Woodlands, he cut in cleverly and dived over for a fine try. Aitken’s kick just failed. Waikato 12 Thames Valley 0 Taylor attempted a penalty goal for Valley and a great effort fell just short. Waikato’s forwards, charging back, made the opening again from which Aitken secured to transfer to Childs, who dazzled the crowd by beating Wilson, Trembarth and Walford before scoring. Ensor’s kick failed. Waikato 15 Thames Valley 0 A determined Valley counter culminated in Taylor failing with another penalty kick. In no time, however. Southerly opened up the play in Waikato’s favour and Everest and Aitken co-operated before Perkins secured possession at half-way The winger succeeded with one of his characteristic solo dashes to outstrip the defence and score. Carroll’s kick failed. At half-time the score was:— Waikato 18 Thames Valley 0 Perkins Scores Again Miller and Furey secured a chance when the Waikato defence was wide open shortly after the resumption of play, but they did not have the speed to take full opportunity of the opening. Twice Waikato forced down. Warrender and Taylor baffled Thames Valley, but when Thomson came into the movement fumbling foiled the Waikato counter-thrust. For a while the attack lapsed, but Perkins turned the offensive into definite action when he cut down three would be-tacklers to score a god try. Hewitt converted. Waikato 23 Thames Valley 0 When Waikato was on the defence Perkins threw a long pass to Aitken. but the direction was pool and Millar seized the opportunity to snatch the ball and score a good try. Taylor, the Thames Valley forward, retired injured and was replaced by Hampton. Mellar converted his own try. Waikato 23 Thames Valley 5 Forwards and Backs Combine Loose forward play soon carried Waikato back to the attack and J. M. Taylor shot the ball to Perkins. With little room in which to operate, Perkins battered his way over in the corner. Hewitt’s kick hit the post and was deflected outside. Waikato 26 Thames Valley 5 Millar missed with a penalty kick fdr Valley and Baker developed an attack. Right on the line Findlay

robbed Warrender of possession and scored. Millar’s kick failed. Waikato 26 Thames Valley 8 When Waikato’s forwards developed an opening by Everest, Catley pushed his way through a rucking charge to score. Johnson failed to convert. Waikato 29 Thames Valley 8 The game ended with Waikato still attacking. Mr A. Paterson, of Hamilton, was the referee. JUNIORS WELL BEATEN HAMILTON TEAM LOSES In the curtain raiser to the Waikato-Thames Valley game at Morrinsville on Saturday, the Hamilton junior representatives were heavily defeated by the Morrinsville junior representatives. The home team won by 24 points to 0. The match was a return game to the previous week’s encounter in Hamilton, when the teams drew, 12—12.
