MAORIS AT PUKEKOHE
DISCUSSION ON WELFARE MINISTER PAYS VISIT (By Telegraph.—special to Times) AUCKLAND, Saturday The Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. F. Langstone, met representatives of the vegetable growers, the Franklin County Council and the Pukekohe Borough Council at Pukekohe yesterday and discussed the welfare of Maoris in the market gardening area. The Minister said later that he had told the representatives that he regarded it as most necessary that the living conditions of Maoris in the district should be improved and families provided with proper houses. The local representatives had asked that some action be taken in regard to Maori women and girls working, and in some cases living, on properties occupied by Indians and Chinese. Mr Langstone said he had replied that, while the occupiers no doubt were law-abiding citizens, they did not have their own womenfolk with them, and the employment of Maori women by them was undesirable unless safeguards were provided. The matter would be further considered. Regarding complaints of excessive drinking by Maoris, the Minister said that strong measures might have to be taken.
