FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS
RAIDS ON THE CONTINENT LARGE FACTORY DAMAGED MANY BOMBS DROPPED (Omclal Wireless) (Received August 30, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 29 The Royal Air Fortfe on Wednesday night dropped over 15 high explosives and incendiaries on a large Junkers factory at Dessau. The attack lasted half-an-hour. Many. explosions were observed. A large fire which broke out after a salvo of bombs and canisters and incendiaries had been dropped by the first aircraft helped to guide the following bombers on to the target. Shortly after the first salvo had fallen another raider, making a gliding attack from 7000 feet, hit an adjoining aerodrome with two sicks of bombs and then returned to scatter over 60 incendiaries over the area. At the eastern end of the works fires started in some of the main buildings and one salvo resulted in an explosion, which was observed by the pilot of another aircraft taking part in the raid. The raiders attacking the central buildings were equally successful, one observer reporting heavy explosions and numerous fires after a stick of bombs had been dropped.
