BERLIN BOMBED

Tel- Copyright) (Received August 30, 3.15 p.m.) BERLIN, Aug. 29 Germany for the first time since the outbreak of the war has admitted that British bombs were dropped on industrial plants. A German communique states: “ Our bombers yesterday attacked aerodromes at Eastchurch and Southend and successfully raided the harbour of Bognor Regis. Stronger attacks were launched last night against the harbour of Liverpool, also Cardiff, Bristol, Middlesborough, Chatham, and Thameshaven, and armament centres at Sheffield, Norwich and Coventry. Air fights developed at several places. Thirty-eight English and 12 German planes were shot down. British planes last night intentionally attacked Berlin’s residential quarters and suburbs. Explosives incendiary bombs damaged several Blocks of flats, killed or injured numerous civilians, and damaged houses. One of the attackers was shot down by gunfire before reaching Berlin. The British also attacked the Leuna works. The damage was slight. There was no damage worth mentioning elsewhere in Central and Western Germany. The losses throughout the day were 44 British and 15 German planes. A U-boat commanded by CaptainLieutenant Schetk sank seven armed merchantmen, five of which were strongly convoyed.
