CERTIFIED SEED
MSTRIBUTION OF WHEAT
MODIFICATIONS IN SCHEME (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday Certain alterations to the seed wheat certification scheme of the Department of Agriculture for the ensuing year were announced by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, who said he had decided with regret to modify the scheme so that there would be no hindrance to the efficient production of linen flax.
Briefly, said Mr Lee Martin, the proposals were to produce each season nucleus lines of seed wheat of various varieties. This seed would be sown out and the produce would be distributed commercially as certified seed wheat. Due attention would be given to the relative importance of different varieties. It was fully realised that these proposals would mean restriction in the use of certified seed wheat. The restriction in the actual quantities of certified seed would not be in proportion to the restriction in acreage affected, and, further, it was felt that the higher quality which should arise from the fact that certified seed would be under continual reselection should materially benefit the position. The Minister urged farmers to support the proposals.
