AOTEA ON TOP

HOOPER CUP HOCKEY WIDE MARGIN OVER COLTS GOOD WIN FOR KAIPAKI Colts failed to play up to expectations in its match with Aotea at Steele Park on Saturday, losing by six goals to nil, and leaving the Technical team leader in the Hooper Cup hockey competition. However, the fact that Kaipaki beat Old Boys in the other senior fixture leaves Colts in second position on the competition table. However, on Saturday’s form Aotea will be difficult to displace from the leading position. The competition table now reads as follows:

WIN FOR KAIPAKI OLD BOYS BEATEN In a fast, open game Kaipaki had the better of Old Boys, winning by three goals to two. The game was even in the first half, but Kaipaki was on top after the interval and thoroughly deserved its win. The teams were:— Kaipaki: Goodwin, F. Boyd, A. Boyd, M. Boyd, Farrell, McCarthy, G. Boyd, B. Ganley, K. Graham. Sexton, T. Ganley. Old Boys: Wattam, Broadbent, Pountney, Olive, Ross, Ojala, Chard, Vercoe, Ewan, Wright, Sutherland. Kaipaki had an early chance when Pountney missed his shot in face of a strong attack. The country forwards carried the ball through to the goal mouth and had the goalie bustled but Wattam in the melee that followed managed to get his stick to the ball and send it out. Score to Old Boys From the roll-in, Old Boys took play up to Kaipaki’s circle, where a penalty corner was awarded. Ewan made a good attempt to goal, but Goodwin got his boot to the ball in time. However, he was unable to send it away from the circle, and Ewan took the defence by surprise wheh he suddenly scooped the ball high into the net. Old Boys 1, Kaipaki 0. The country team attacked smartly from the bully. Graham carried the ball through on his own after the forwards had reached the circle and dribbled it right up to the goalie before sending a nicely-calculated shot into the net. Kaipaki 1, Old Boys 1. Only Goodwin’s sure kicking kept Old Boys out during the next few minutes. In one ‘attack, a penalty comer gave Ewan another chance to show his prowess as a goal-getter, but his hard shot was well blocked by Goodwin’s pads. However, the defenders were unable to get the ball away cleanly, and the attacking forwards crowded into the goal mouth. Vercoe seized his opportunity and sent the ball from short range into the net. Old Boys 2, Kaipaki 1. Kaipaki several times brought play down to the circle but could do nothing with the ball when it was within goaling distance. Success ultimately came, however, when Farrell received from a penalty corner and sent a hard shot into the net for one of the best goals seen at the park for some time. Kaipaki 2, Old Boys 2. After this success, Kaipaki continued to press hard and Old Boys’ defence was forced to give of its best. Following several attacks, Farrell obtained another great goal from a melee near the goal mouth. Kaipaki 3, Old Boys 2. Goal Threatened The country team threatened Old Boys’ goal once again, but Ross temporarily relieved the pressure with a good clearance. Farrell later made an attempt to register a further goal but Wattam blocked the jpall well. The game ended without further addition to the score. Messrs McKinnon and Puch were the umpires.

WIDE MARGIN COLTS WELL BEATEN Aotea proved altogether too good for Colts and the team’s superiority in all departments was indicated by its win by six goals to nil. Colts never gave up the struggle, but the team was quite unable to cope with the opposition’s repeated thrusts. The teams were:— Aotea: Puch, Bowler, Clark, Hinton, Jenkins, Sage, Fountain, Hoff. Powdrill, Sage, Lipsey. Colts: McKinnon, H. Tozer, Salisbury, Jane, Harvey, Clifford, Campbell, Curteis, Perrett, Clark, Tozer. Play had not been long in progress when Lipsey scored a good goal for Aotea from the side of the circle. An unusual goal came Aotea’s way when Jenkins, right on the edge of the circle, sent the ball high in the air. It travelled over the heads of the defenders into the net. Aotea 2, Colts 0. Colts Fight Hard Colts fought hard to reduce the Technical team’s lead, but Aotea’s defence was too sound. Following one fast attack, Clark and Perrett carried the ball right to the goalmouth, but an infringement spoilt th' movement. Campbell later put Colts on the attack again with a fast rim down the side. Play was taken to the circle and Colts had an opportunity to goal following a short corner, but Clark’s effort was just wide. Powdrill was within an ace of adding to the score when McKinnon came out of the goal and failed to clear. The Technical forward had an open goal in front but was going too fast to send in an [ accurate shot. However, a further attack a few ; seconds later developed into a melee l in front of the goal mouth. Sage did not let the opportunity pass, sending I a hard shot past McKinnon. Aotea 3. Colts 0. Aotea went further ahead almost j immediately, Sage and Powdrill tak-

ing the ball to the goal mouth, the former hitting a high ball into the net. Aotea 4. Colts 0. Colts showed more enterprise after these further reverses and for a brief j period hemmed Aotea in the circle, i Harvey made a good attempt to goal I from a corner, but the ball was well ! stopped by Puch. ! o ! i" Two More Goals ; {< Aotea was soon in the picture again, Powdrill, Hoff and Sage mak- n ing up ground with hard hitting. )) McKinnon blocked two shots at goal, i j but eventually a shot from Hoff’s ! n stick got past him. Aotea 5, Colts 0. 11 Perrett took the ball through on his i own to the goal mouth, but Puch ! o came out of goal, tackled him and j L sent the ball well away. ! The Technical team put the issue ' r beyond doubt when Powdrill took a pass from Sage, who had initiated an attack down the right flank, and sent the ball hard into the net. Aotea 6, Colts 0. i y The final whistle sounded with the j p score unchanged. Messrs Hunter and Ewan were the umpires. u
