SOLDIERS FAREWELLED
PRESENTATION DANCE Eager to show their appreciation of the men of the third echelon, the people of Tirau and Okoroire were present in large numbers at the Tirau Hall recently, when the patriotic committee arranged a farewell presentation dance in honour of local soldiers. During the evening, Mr N. L. Higginson expressed to the men the district’s appreciation of their sacrifices and wished them farewell and good luck. “It is perhaps fitting,” said Mr E. Neil, on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, “that we, as representatives of the army of yesterday should gather tonight to bid farewell to you, our successors.” Mr Landman spoke on behalf of the Paterere Football Club and made presentations to Private J. Emmett, Private C. Tyrrell, and Driver D. Weston, former members of the club. Cap.tain Kedgley spoke on behalf of his comrades. On behalf of the Tirau Patriotic Society, Mr N. L. Higginson presented each of the following with an engraved wristlet watch:— Captain Kedgley, Corporal P. Paul, Corporal P. Dee, Privates C. Craig, J. Emmett, D. Weston. B. Banks, C. Tyrrell, A. Tyrrell, M. Fry, A. Fraser, E. Spain, J. Davidson. Small presentations were also made to three visitors, Private T. Baker, Private O. R. Houghton and Private Hill. Items by Maoris Miss Flynn sang “There Will Always Be An England.” Musical honours were then accorded the guests-of-honour. “Maori Battalion” and other songs presented by four local Maoris made a pleasant interlude in the dance programme.
