WOMEN’S GOLF

INTERESTING MATCH PLAY Match play holds the principal interest of members at St. Andrews at present with three cups being competed for at difficult stages of play. The Douglas Cup was decided this week between Mrs H. McDonald and Mrs V. D. Edwards. Both players played well, being all square at the turn, but from there Mrs Edwards gradually drew ahead to win 3 up and two to play. In the consolation competition Mrs Bindon, who was playing on top of her form, had a very easy win from Mrs Berry. The Clachan Rose Bowl competition has now reached the semi-finals, with Mrs Mander, Mrs S. Bennett, Mrs Darby, and Mrs Seyb remaining in the running. The match between Mrs Mander and Mrs Jewell ended all square and had to be replayed, when Mrs Mander clinched the match on the 18th green. The match between Mrs Seyb and Mrs Brewis was also very close, and finished in Mrs Seyb’s favour, also on tho last green. First Round of Horton Cup The first round of the Horton Cup was played last Wednesday in fair weather with very wet conditions underfoot. Four of the sixteen matches proved very close. Mrs Rawlings won from Mrs Toombs 1 up after a very hard fought game. Mrs Batt defeated Mrs Melvin on the last green. Mrs Brewis contested every bit of the way to beat Mrs Hilton at the 18th, while Mrs Watson came in 2 up on Mrs Qualtrough after another great struggle. The next round will be played on August 28. Should any player happen to be away on account of the closing of the schools, she may arrange with her opponent to play on the following Monday or Tuesday. A consolation competition will bo played by those who lost in the first round, the trophy for which has been given by Mrs Daldy. The Stableford bogey competition on Wednesday was won by Mrs V. D. Edwards with a score of 30 points. South Auckland Tournament Satisfactory entries have been received for the South Auckland tournament which commences next Tuesday and we are particularly gratified to see the number of low handicap players who are taking part. These are 11 players with a handicap of 10 or better. These include Miss M. Jefferd (Hastings) 4, Mrs Mander and Mrs McDonald (Hamilton) 4, Mrs G. F. Ferguson (Middlemore) 5, Miss N. Beverley (Matamata) and Mrs R. P. Glanville (Te Awamutu) present holder of the cup 6, Mrs H. D. John.? son (Maungakiki) and Mrs L. I. Day and Mrs Seyb (Hamilton) 7, Miss F. Hewitt (Morrinsville) and Mrs J. Wilson (Middlemore) 10. With such an interesting entry visitors are assured of seeing some really good golf next week.
