AMERICAN TANKS

MASS PRODUCTION PLANS 53,500,000 DOLLARS’ CONTRACT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel, Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 15 The War Department has completed arrangements with the Chrysler organisation for the mass-pro-duction of tanks under a 53,500,000dollar contract. It is the largest contract yet awarded under the programme to build new munitions industries with Federal funds. The plant will be situated at Detroit, and will employ nearly 5000 workers. Operations will begin within thirteen months.

The Secretary of the Treasury, Mr H. Morgenthau, stated on August 8 that British tank experts were advising United States Army officials in tank construction and design. Mr Morgenthau said the United States had no plans to produce special types for the British. “If buying, the British must take our tanks, although, ot course, they are giving us the benefit of their experience,” he stated. The House of Representatives passed by 342 votes to 33 the legislation empowering President Roosevelt to mobilise 360,000 men of the National Guard and Army reservists for a year’s military service anywhere in the western hemisphere, United States possessions or the Philippines.
