HARBOUR FIRE

SUVA LAUNCH ABANDONED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright ) SUVA, Aug. 7 Catching alight from an engine backfire the pilot launch Mona was burned out on the reef at the entrance to Suva Harbour yesterday afternoon and quickly became a total loss. The harbourmaster had just taken an overseas vessel out, and when nearing the reef entrance on his return the trouble occurred. The flames quickly took charge and the harbourmaster and his crew were forced to abandon the launch and take to the dinghy. Launches quickly put out from the harbour and picked the men up. A native boy was severely burned about the hands in attempting to extinguish the flames.

The Mona was built 30 years ago by Messrs Bailey and Sons, of Auckland, and has seen service in Tonga and Apia.
