DESTINATION OF MONEY

SICK AND WOUNDED FUND CRITICISM IN HAWKE’S BAY (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) HASTINGS, Friday Criticism of the manner in which the Sick and Wounded Fund had been dispensed was expressed at a meeting of the Hastings zone Patriotic Committee, which decided to request the Government to retain in New Zealand the balance of the money raised over and above £250,000 for use in the rehabilitation of soldiers on their return home. It was contended that the people were misled into giving £600,000 instead of the £250,000 aimed at by the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance appeal, it not being fully appreciated that the money would be handled by the Red Cross International at Geneva, and not solely for the benefit of New Zealand’s fighting services. It was recently disclosed that £IO,OOO had been sent to France, Norway and Belgium, and a further sum was about to be sent to Holland when it was stopped. It would appear, it was stated, that unless some action was taken by the Government the full sum raised would be used for the benefit of soldiers of all nationalities, and not exclusively for New Zealand men.

COOK ISLANDS GIVE PATRIOTIC DONATIONS (By Telegraph.—press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday At a meeting of the Patriotic Committee, which includes the Island Council at Avarua, Rarotonga, a further £550 was voted toward the New Zealand patriotic funds, states the Rarotonga correspondent of the United Press Association. This brings the total contributions to date from Rarotonga to £1550. The sum of £IOO has already been forwarded i from the island of Atiu to New Zealand, and contributions from other islands of the group are now being collected. VACANCIES ON COUNCIL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday The Government has appointed the Hon. V. A. Ward, M.L.C., and Mr J. Abel, to fill vacancies on the National Patriotic Council created by the appointment of Colonel F. Waite. M.L.C., as Gifts Commissioner abroad, for the Expeditionary Force and the departure for England of Dr. A. Gillies.
