MATRON RETIRES
NEW PLYMOUTH HOSPITAL Tributes were paid by a large gathering of the staff of New Plymouth Hospital and former members at a farewell gathering recently in honour of Miss B. A. Campbell, M.8.E., who has retired from the position of matron after 40 years’ service. Miss M. I. Lambie, 0.8. E., Director of the Nursing Division, recalled the great work done by Miss Campbell in the infant days of nursing, and said the girls she had trained were known in many parts of the world. For her work on the Nurses’ Association and the Midwives’ Registration Board, Miss Campbell had been honoured by His Majesty the King. Miss Campbell, she added, had shown a marvellous power of leadership, ability to inspire and retain loyalty, reasoned judgment, and, above all, faith in the great cause of working for humanity. During Miss Campbell’s charge of the hospital, 217 nurses had passed their finals from New Plymouth and eight had gained top Dominion honours. The standard of training there was recognised as among the best in New Zealand.
