FIRST RUGBY SUCCESS BAY OF PLENTY DEFEATED BACKS PLAY UP TO FORM (By Telegraph—Special to Times) TAURANGA, Saturday. With the backs playing right up to the form which had been expected of them in earlier matches, and the forwards giving the solid and efficient display which has become characteristic of the team, the Waikato Rugby representatives secured their first victory of the season today in defeating Bay of Plenty, at Tauranga, by 17 points to 6. The weather was fine and the ground was dry for the game. The football was bright and open practically throughout. Waikato definitely had the measure of the opposition and secured the territorial advantage, with the backs playing ! splendidly and taking every oppor- j tunity to stage an exciting and pene- I trative movement. The Reece- | Everest five-eighths combination led to many exciting movements on the part of the Waikato backs. Outstanding among the forwards was P. J. Farren, the Taupiri frontrow man, who has played consistently brilliant Rugby in the forwards this year. J. M. Taylor was also prominent throughout the game. Three Tries and Field Goal At half-time Waikato was leading ■ Bay of Plenty by 10 points to 3, J. M. Taylor having secured a fine try from a good forward movement, and ' R. Everest also having crossed the Bay of Plenty line. Satherley, playing his first game in the Waikato pack, converted the first try and L. | G. C. Reece converted the second. j C. Perkins, the speedy Hamilton | winger who secured a brilliant try ; against Auckland in the previous ! Waikato representative fixture, was again among the points when he went over in the second half. His try was unconverted. One of the highlights of the spectacular game was a fine drop-kick j field-goal which the Waikato cap- ; tain, A. J. Aitken, secured to bring 1 Waikato’s tally to 17 points.
