RAGLAN LEADS

CLARKE CUP RUGBY CITY AND OLD BOYS NEXT TWO GAMES ON SATURDAY As a result of the matches for the Clarke Cup on Saturday Raglan, which had its third successive win by default, went to the head of the table from City and Old Boys, who are level two points behind Raglan. Technical Old Boys defaulted to Raglan and the only two matches played were between City and Old Boys in Hamilton and Taupiri and Frankton at Taupiri. City gained a five-point margin over Old Boys, while Taupiri was seven points clear of Frankton when the final whistle blew. The results were; — City 13, Old Boys 8 Taupiri 13, Frankton 6 Raglan beat Technical by default. Clarke Cup Points Raglan 6, City and Old Boys 4, Taupiri and Technical Old Boys 2, Frankton 0. CITY AGAIN OLD BOYS DEFEATED FINAL SCORE 13 TO 8 The chief attraction in Hamilton, the Clarke Cup match between City and Old Boys, resulted in a win for City by 13 points to 8, this being the third occasion this year on which City has been victorious over Old Boys. The match was not a good exhibition of Rugby, the tackling being very weak and there was far too much kicking. The teams were:— City.—Brighouse, Sunich, McCallum, Smith, Heywood, Hand, Dobson, Dowling, R. Keen, Spiro, Flyger, Young, W. Keen, Johnson, Scott. Old Boys.—Albert Lissette, Bartlett, Slow, Vcgt, Alan Lissette, Gillespie, Featherstonhaugh, Blow, Lee, Waite, Jones, Johnston, Sayers, Bremer, Needham. An early penalty to City in a handy position for Albert Lissette holding the ball gave City the chance to draw first blood, but Johnson missed an easy kick. Old Boys cleared to halfway, but Heywood put City on the attack again, Spiro making a great break to fall just short. Neither side had settled down but Old Boys had the territorial advantage for a spell. Slow missed an attempt at a penalty goal and then Hand, Dobson and McCallum participated in a movement which nearly brought results for City. Too Much Kicking The game was very scrappy over the first quarter of an hour, both sides kicking far too frequently. Albert Lissette and Brighouse, the fullbacks, were the only players showing any form, Brighouse’s handling and kicking being brilliant. Hand cut through nicely and handed on to Heywood but Lee tackled soundly. A little later, from another back movement, Dobson sent on to McCallum. From right under the posts McCallum drop-kicked a smart goal. City 4, Old Boys 0. Blow, Bremer and Sayers gave Old Boys the advantage and then Slow missed a shot at goal from a penalty. Poor tackling by Old Boys’ backs nearly let Heywood in, and a lucky bounce saved the defenders. "When Waite and Lee kicked downfield and Bartlett followed up, Sunich just got back in time to force down. Poor tackling by Old Boys’ forwards and inside backs allowed the City forwards to come through the centre twice. Slow then missed an easy chance to goal from a penalty. Just before halftime Old Boys had a chance when Slow received in a good position but he failed to make a bid for the line, kicking too hard Instead. City Makes the Pace With the advantage of the wind City made the pace early in the second spell. Heywood made a great bid and then Sunich picked up a rolling ball splendidly. Albert Lissette tackled Slow, however, and later he halted the advance with a good mark. Old Boys, throwing the ball about more, gradually gained the ascendency and Slow goaled from a penalty kick under the posts. Then Needham opened a good movement, Featherstonhaugh, Lee and Waite handling in turn for the latter to score under the posts, Slow converting. Old Boys 8, City 4. Two free kicks assisted City to reach an attacking position. The backs operated cleanly, McCallum cutting in nicely but Bartlett tackled well. Smith then kicked a splendid goal for City from a penalty, to place City within one point of Old Boys. Hand later came through for City , and tried a sliort kick, but Albert Lissette again marked well. City was making all the play at this stage and was assisted by poor tackling. The attackers went to the lead when Old Boys was penalised, Smith kicking a good goal. A few minutes | later Old Boys was again penalised ! and Smith again raised the flags with a grand kick. City 13, Old Boys 8. City continued to make the pace and Brighouse missed an attempt at a drop-kicked goal. Old Boys eventually worked clear and Lee, Waite ' and Gillespie carried play to City’s twenty-five. Heywood again flashed into prominence when he clashed down the centre of the field. Hand carried the movement on, but was tackled : in goat as the final whistle blew. , City 13, Old Boys 8. Mr A. A. Griffiths was the referee. TAUPIRI'S WIN FRANKTON SIDE BEATEN As was the case last year, the Taupiri team this season is having its run of successes late in the season. Considered one of the strongest sides entered for the Stag Trophy

competition, the country team failed to settle down early and also was narrowly beaten on several occasions during the major competition. With the season nearing its end, Taupiri is repeating last year’s late run of wins and again on Saturday scored a decisive victory over Frankton. Neither team was at full strength, Taupiri having its three front-row forwards away with the Waikato side and Frankton being without the services of R. Everest, L. G. Reece, F. Aherne and A. Satherley. However, the match was played as scheduled, at Taupiri, and the home side was always in the lead. At half-time Taupiri had scored two unconverted tries, while Frankton had failed to score. In the second half Dick crossed Taupiri’s line for Frankton and Jim Everest kicked a penalty goal, while Taupiri scored another try, which was converted, and D. Burke kicked a penalty goal, making the final score 14 to 6 in Taupiri’s favour. NO GAME AT RAGLAN The Raglan senior team won by default for the third successive time in the Clarke Cup series when Technical Old Boys defaulted and thus, although it has not played a match, it is leading in the competition. HAMILTON’S VICTORY MATAMATA JUNIORS BEATEN With a lead of 9 to 3 at half-time the Hamilton third grade representatives defeated the Matamata junior representatives by 15 points to 3 as tiie curtain-raiser on Nn, 1 ground. tad the ad\ antter ( imbination, but it was an interesting game.
