COMRADES’ NARROW WIN GLEN MASSEY’S FINE DISPLAY CHATHAM CUP MATCH One of the most exciting Association games ever seen at Seddon Park was the Auckland provincial final for the Chatham Cup on Saturday. The match, which was between Comrades (Auckland) and Glen Massey (South Auckland), re- i suited in a win for the former by two goals to one, after extra time had been played. Although the ground was sodden, the game was very fast. Territorial advantage was even, and Glen Massey was unlucky in being beaten. For Comrades, M. Francis, Walters, Masters and Riggans were outstanding, while J. Montford, Gorman, A. Griffiths and W. Montford were the pick of the Glen Massey team. The teams were:— Comrades: Yearbury, Riggans, McKenna, Matthews, Fincham, Healy, Evans, M. Francis, Walters, A. Francis, Masters. Glen Massey: J. Montford, Al. Griffiths, G. Brown, R. Davies, Lees, McFarlane, W. Montford, J. Connew, A. Griffiths, C. Gorman, T. Davies. The opening play was fast and Glen Massey, doing most of the attacking, forced two corners in quick succession. The second corner nearly resulted in Comrades being one goal down. Glen Massey was making the most of the opportunities offering, and tested Comrades goalie on several occasions. Comrades broke free, however, and swept to Glen Massey’s territory with clever passing. The Auckland team missed a golden opportunity to score, Walters kicking wide when confronted with an easy target. A corner was then forced by Comrades, but the country team cleared, and penned Comrades in its goal, peppering Yearbury with some hard shots. Masters and Francis Prominent Masters. w r ho was not being given much room to move, enlivened pro- | ceedings with a smart run down the i side-line but his cross-kick was in--1 tercepted. M. Francis attracted at- . tention when he beat three Glen j Massey players and cleared Comrades from a dangerous situation. There was no score at half-time. Play ebbed up and down field after the interval until Glen Massey was lucky when Francis sent in a very hard, low shot, but J. Montford effected a brilliant save. Two ! further saves by the Glen Massey : goal-keeper earned applause from the large crowd. Comrades then took the lead, Masters shooting a splendid goal to give Comrades the first score of the match. Heartened by its success, Comrades attacked again, but Walters’ kick at goal sailed over the crossbar. Glen Massey swept to Comrades’ goal mouth, and forced a corner. W. Montford sent over a well-judged crosskick from which German goaled: Glen Massey 1, Comrades 1. Glen Massey stormed Comrades’ goal again and almost scored. Full ; time came with the score unchanged. Extra Time Extra time had then to be played, 10 minutes each way being allotted. The first half was even, but early in the second half Walters received and transferred to M. Francis, who headed the ball into the net. The game ended with the score: Comrades 2, Glen Massey 1. Mr T. Chalklin was referee. TEAM LEAVES FIELD INCIDENT AT CHRISTCHURCH (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday Led by the captain, A. Sutherland, the Thistle team walked off the field as a protest against the oraering-off of one of its players during the sec- ; ond spell of the local Chatham Cup i Soccer final against Western yesterday. It was only after officials had talked with the teams that the match was continued. The game was comparatively free of ill-feeling up to this stage, and the trouble really began when Western was awarded a goal in the second spell which caused protests from the Thistle players. The player ordered off was W. Sutherland, the Thistle right-half. Thistle was disappointing on an ! extremely slippery ground, Western holding the upper hand for most of the game to win by 3 goals to 1.
