SURPRISE WINS

HOCKEY IN HAMILTON COLTS AND KAIPAKI J AOTEA AND OLD BOYS DOWN ' Aotea, -winner of the Killip Memorial Shield, and formerly unbeaten hockey leader this season, mat its first defeat at the hands of Colts at Steele Park on Saturday by two goals to nil. Colts’ victory was I fully merited, the team as a whole | proving the better combination on the day. In a second surprise win, Kaipaki defeated Old Boys by three goals to two after a bright and interesting encounter. In the Killip Memorial Shield competition Aotea and Old Boys were the two leading teams, both Kaipaki and Colts being substantially behind in points. The table in the Hooper Cup competition now reads as follows: , P. W. L. D. T. A. Pis. Aotea - l 1 0 5 3 2 Old Boys 2 1 1 0 5 4 2 Kaipaki 12 1 1 0 4 3 2 Colts 2 1 1 0 3 7 2 COLTS GOOD WIN AOTEA WELL BEATEN The Colts team thoroughly de- j nerved its win against Aotea by two j goals to nil. Aotea may not have ) played at the top of its form, but' still at the same time Colts proved both superior on attack and defence and its win was a meritorious one. The teams were.—Aotea: Puch, Bowler, Clark, Hinton, Jenkins, Sage, Fountain, Hoff, Powdrill, Judge, W. Sage. Colts: McKinnon, Tozer, Salisbury, Melling, Harvey, Jane, Campbell, Curteis, Bogue, Perritt, W. Tozer. Early in the game, Melling opened •up play at the twenty-five, Tozer and rerrett taking the ball up to the circle where the whole of the forward line harried Puch, who was unable to block a high shot from Pertett. Colts 1, Aotea 0. Infringements held up Aotea when It was attacking down the centre. Powdrill at one stage broke through on his own, but was moving too fast tq make an effffective shot when be reached the circle t* Aotea Attacks Bowler cleared well after Tozer had taken the ball down the right, Hoff following the ball up and bringing play down to Colts’ twenty-five. The attack was pressed home, but McKinnon, in goal, successfully kicked clear when a goal seemed imminent. Fountain later robbed Melling of possession and took play again to the circle. However, with only the goalie to prevent a goal, he over-ran the ball which went to the dead hall area. Colts attacked vigorously in the circle. A close melee terminated when Harvey scooped the ball into the net. Colts 2, Aotea 0. Solid Defence Curteis took the ball down tho centre, but Clark held him up and managed to send the ball back. A determined attack on Colts’ circle was set up, but the defenders would let nothing past them. Defence was turned into attack by Colts’ forwards. Harvey sent the ball across to the circle, Perrett gaining possession and taking the ball on to the goal mouth. Puch, in goal, however, foiled Perrctt’s attempt to score by coming out and kicking well clear. Powdrill was within an ace of scoring in a brisk counter-attack on Colts* goal. He hit the ball hard to the net after McKinnon had come far out, but his shot was just wide. Aotea attacked determinedly for a spell but could make no difference to the score before the final whistle sounded. Messrs T. A. Ewan and D. Hunter were the umpire**

KAIPAKI ON TOP DEFEAT OF OLD BOYS Showing better combination than on previous Saturdays, Kaipaki scored a well-deserved win over Old Boys by three goals to two. Play was very even right through and the general standard of play was higher than that seen in the last series of club games. The teams were.—Old Boys: Wattam, Pountney, Broadbent, Olive, Ross, Ojala, Chard, Vercoe, Ewan, Wright, Sutherland. Kaipaki: Goodwin, F. Boyd, A. Boyd, Seaton, Farrell. McCarthy, M. Boyd, G. Boyd, Graham, B. Ganly, T. Ganly. The opening stages were marked by very even play. Kaipaki failed to put an early corner to any advantage, Pountney eventually sending the ball hard away to mid-field. G. Boyd, Graham and Ganly combined in a movement that reached the circle, but the last named mistimed his shot at goal. Kaipaki Threatened Old Boys counter-attacked down the centre and reached the circle. Sutherland and Wright were handy near the goal month, but Goodwin kicked clear on the two occasions when his goal was threatened. An infringement allowed the country team to work clear of the danger zone. A swift Kaipaki attack brought its forwards to the circle. A hard shot by G. Boyd at the goal was cleverly blocked by the goalie, Wattam, and Old Boys defenders gradually took play back to mid-field. Sutherland brought the ball up the right flank and centred across the goal mouth. In the melee that followed in the goal mouth, Ewan had a hard shot at goal from close in, Goodwin just getting his pads to it in time. Graham, supported by B. Ganly, took the ball through to the circle. Graham attempted to goal following a long comer, but the ball was sent back to Farrell, the centre-half in turn sending the ball over Wattam’s head into the corner of the net. Kaipaki 1, Old Boys 0. The country team went further ahead in the next few minutes. A long shot from Farrell’s stick at half-way was followed up hard by the forwards* Wattam came out, but B. Ganly got past him and sent the ball into the net from fairly close in, Ewan just failing to block it. Kaipaki 2, Old Boys 0. Old Boys Succeeds A loose forward rush brought Old Boys to the circle. The defenders beat back the first attack, but could not drive the attacks beyond the circle. A hard shot from Chard at the side of the circle tricked Goodwin, the ball finding the net high up. Kaipaki 2, Old Boys 1. After this reverse Kaipaki attacked vigorously and for a short spell swarmed around the goal mouth. A shot from B. Ganly eventually added another to the country team's total. Kaipaki 3, Old Boys 1. Old Boys attacked from the bully, hard hitting bringing the forwards to the circle. Ewan shot for the goal and took the custodian by surprise. Kaipaki 3, Old Boys 2. The score was unaltered at the final whistle. Messrs W. G. Fabling and D. Hunter were the umpires. JUNIOR RESULTS Junior results on Saturday were as follows.—Grade II: Arawa 0, Nawton G; Ohaupo 5, Tokomaru 5. Grade III: Technical A 6, Old Boys A 2; Old Boys B 10, Technical B 0.
