APPROVAL VOICED
RURAL HOUSING SCHEME PROTEST AT LEVY FOR WOOL Approval of the Government’s Rural Housing scheme provided sufficient material were made available was voiced at the monthly meeting of the Whatawhata Farmers’ Union last night. The chairman, Mr H. Johnston, explained the scheme as recently outlined by the Minister of Housing, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. It was agreed that the scheme should prove of value to the farming community. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr A. W. Moore, to ask the Farmers’ Union executive to protest to the Government at the continuation, in war time, of the levy of 6d a bale on wool. Mr Moore pointed out that the levy was for funds for advertising, but in view of the fact that the wool was under commandeer to the British Government there was no need for advertising. Other speakers supported Mr Moore’s remarks. Several other matters affecting the dairy industry were discussed, but in view of the fact that there would be no meeting of the Waikato subprovincial executive in January, final consideration of the questions was left until the next meeting. Mr L. Higginson, supported by Mr W. H. Thompson and other speakers, criticised the executive for not holding a meeting in January, the view being expressed that it showed a certain amount of slackness, particularly at a time when the affairs of the farmers were at a critical stage.
